There are so many reasons why we dread the holiday season as much as why we love it. Hands up if just the thought of running into that annoying high school friend freaks you out. Some people call it Christmas, we call it a yearly patience - and sanity - check-up! Admittedly, we are suckers for winter magic. We love that whole fluffy socks and hot cocoa vibe, discovering Christmas markets and hitting the sales for amazing bargains. But as we all remind ourselves year after year, every rose has its thorn. Because we’ve all been there, here are our top spine tingling sides to every holiday season.
1. Secret Santa In The Office
You’re at work and your boss mentions Secret Santa – already worried? Same here! What do you get someone for under $10? As if that’s not awkward enough, your face paints a picture when you find out which ‘lucky’ colleague you’ve got to get a gift for. Followed by 9999 Christmas dinners each and every one of your colleagues invites you to, the best of the worst is yet to come: the office Christmas party. Swigging back wine with your colleagues does seem like a hoot until you look back at your stories the next morning and realize you may have just told your boss that they’re “alright for a manager”.
2. Heading Back To Your Old Happy Hometown
Heading back to your childhood home for the festive period is sweet – it’s like being a child again with no responsibilities or cares in the world – at least for a weekend. Then the Christmas magic happens. While happily browsing in your local store, you bump into a high school friend that you haven’t talked to since last time you ditched school and ended up playing truth or dare. A trip down memory lane may be sweet, but this unspoken comparison you both have deep down puts an elephant in the room. Only if you didn’t grow too apart.. Get your best smiles out, you’re going to need them!
3. Pressure To Get Married
For some reason, around Christmas time, it seems like your friends and family are plotting to get you married. “When’s your turn?”, “Have you got a man?”, “I know someone nice I could set you up with”, the list goes on. Then comes along the comparison about your cousin who is married with 3 kids and a fourth on the way. Sure, a Christmas wedding seems romantic, but you’re doing brilliantly as you are – and no amount of interrogation from loved ones should make you doubt that.
4. Unwanted Presents
Yes, we know we should be grateful for what we are gifted, but another pair of socks? Or worse – cleaning tools? Where do my family think I live – in a pigsty? Unwanted presents are the worst, particularly when you were convinced it was something else. And let’s face it, we aren’t all born actresses – get practicing that “Oh wow I love it!” without sounding sarcastic.
5. The Tireless Task Of Explaining Your Job
So despite your graduation photos being all over the mantelpiece and being promoted over the last few years, your grandma still can’t work out what you do. For some reason, she still thinks you’re a waitress when you’re actually proud hotel manager graduated from a top hotelier school. Or perhaps your uncle is interrogating you to find out your salary - just so they can figure out if you’re the family loser or not. Even worse, are your cousins - who have barely been able to hold a stable job down - wanting to start a family business? You’re not sharing your empire with anybody!
The end of the holiday season makes you realize that you’ve probably put on a dress size from all the food, that you’re broke and that you’ve got to head back to the office and be an adult again (sigh). Then you have to think about New Year’s resolutions – ones that you’ll actually commit to. Ugh, adulting!
What’s your most awkward holiday season moment? Does it beat any of these? Tell us, and honestly, we promise we won’t laugh (or maybe just a bit)!
