If there’s anything that can get you passionate about fashion, it’s Alexa Chung’s hypnotic style concoctions. The former TV presenter-turned designer and ultimate fashion muse has shown that she’s more than capable of making retro styling more and more relevant as the years go by, particularly in her self-titled fashion label, Alexachung. Like her brand name, Alexa likes keeping things simple. Why complicate things? When you know who you are, affirm it through your style.
Other than her achievements, which of course we applaud, Alexa is also famously known for her bangs and her edgy retro styling with a playful, sometimes almost childlike feel. She plays with textures, corduroy is a fabric that never lets her down, but she sure knows how to rock a satin dress like no other.
If I have learnt anything over the last 5 years, transforming from a teenager to a young woman, style, like myself, evolves. Alexa’s style has ranged from indie-girly vibes to a few more sophisticated, minimalist with a few hints of retro. So what have we gained from Alexa’s style journey?
Sexy doesn’t necessarily mean showing lots of flesh in an non-artistic manner. Sexy is an attitude, sexy is the way you feel when you know you look your best. Some of Alexa’s sexiest and edgiest outfits have been those where, she has sometimes been quite covered, but she has played with dark makeup and an edgy ponytail to transform her outfit.
Retro styling can cover many aspects – though she loves a power suit and super-sharp tailoring she knows how to play with more feminine pieces. Getting that balance in your wardrobe is a dream, knowing how to rock off-duty in a pair of jeans and doing a Cinderella and bringing out the big guns with your favorite LBD is something we all want to accomplish.
There are so many ways Alexa is creative with her style, she comes up with retro concoctions that make us swoon. Even back in the 2000s, when she had turned her hand from TV presenting on UK television to rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after fashion icons of that era, we all loved her childlike pinafore dresses and Peter Pan collared shirts. She’s the one who made us want to try it all! And now, she’s got her own brand, inspired a mix of 90s and more vintage styles, all created and designed by the lady herself.
Chung is sought after by many fashion brands, but she knows and sticks to what works with her personal style. Many designers want to dress her, especially since she can be usually spotted in the Front Row at Fashion Weeks past and present, but you don’t see her in necessarily very trend-led pieces, but the way she wears them makes them more appealing to us. She’s also very careful with her collaborations, in 2012 she collaborated with French brand Maje, which suited her style down to a tee – vintage Parisian looks with a modern twist. Proof that she doesn’t just say yes to every offer going!
Yes, she’s adventurous with her style, but she also likes to invest in those basics that can be used time and time again for layering or for completing an outfit. Alexa loves the basics we adore too – a basic white tee, a denim jacket, a pair of Mom jeans, a simple knit… she doesn’t try too hard to create a crazy Haute Couture look, and why should she? They aren’t practical or always all that confidence-boosting. Dress for you, not for the crazy designers that will change their minds next season.
