Scandi fashion has been creeping up on us with its effortless and timeless vibe last few years, and standing out from London and Paris street styles with its minimalist, yet refreshing and cool, yet practical looks. New Nordic brands are battling it out to see who can pull out all the stops and become as iconic as Acné Studios – but it’s not necessarily about the designers you wear, rather than how you wear pieces.

I have been admiring this style from a distance for the past few months, and the amazing news is that it’s a look that flatters most body shapes and is very inclusive. I feel like it is so easy to add a Scandi “feel” to our outfit, even if you don’t go all out. It’s relatable, fresh and versatile, it doesn’t alienate anyone, and you don’t have to splash cash to get the look. In fact, you probably have 75% of what you need in your wardrobe!

The aesthetic is all about minimalism – the Scandi woman is not strictly forbidden from prints or color, but she integrates them subtly into her style, making sure she respects the crisp, clean shapes she is looking for. Like the Parisian woman, she opts for comfort, practicality but also style, she’s not over-the-top, excessively girly, but does like to mix smart and casual.

However, don’t get that confused with being “dull” – in fact the Scandi woman will experiment. As I mentioned above, she plays with some print and color, but she is also experimental with her outfit combinations. She will dare an asymmetric-hem dress with Mom jeans, and she will dare the forever-dreaded socks and sandals combo. The thing is, Scandi style isn’t just an aesthetic – it’s a vibe.

Have Scandis ever had a faux pas? No. Because what they wear represents their true selves, their outfits are an expression of their own inner “vibe”. Not everyone will wear a sack dress, not everyone will wear frill-hem trousers - because no two outfits are the same – but they believe in what they are wearing and ooze confidence. When you see anyone, Scandi or not, walking down the street looking (and feeling) incredible, it’s hard not to believe in them too. Scandis like to take a risk, they’re pretty fierce and fearless women, which is why we favor them at She Is Rebel.

Then there’s how they will team it with the rest of their outfit, they could get the midi skirt of the season, but they will experiment so that it will look different to everyone else’s. They are some of the most daring people in the world of fashion, and are not intimidated by the different types of girls around them. They are very attached to their capsule wardrobe, and they will have the same basics as us – t-shirts, wrap dresses, lots of denim. but they wear them in a way that makes them stand out. I think that’s something I would love to take and try out in my own wardrobe. We are all guilty sometimes of wearing the same outfit combinations over and over again (well I am anyway) as if we only have 5 outfits. The fact of the matter is, we would probably have at least 10 outfit choices if we just took the time to explore. Fashion is all about playing with what we already have to create something innovative and chic. It’s also about daring to stand out from the crowd, something we all cower away from at certain times of our lives.
Nordic ladies are also clever with their spending – as I mentioned before, they have basics that are the foundation of their looks, but obviously buy a few more trend-driven pieces here and there, but these pieces aren’t at the core of their looks. The trick is to have a lot of simple pieces, but add one statement piece per outfit. That could be those funky pants you saw online, or a huge pair of statement earrings, that turn your simple outfit from drab to fab. So not only are they practical dressers – they are also very smart. If you want to be inspired by Scandi style, then you’re not ever going to break the bank – it’s ideal if you are on a budget but want to look more expensive! Fact: understated chic will always look more expensive than what you have spent. We won’t tell if you don’t!

Do you think Scandis have won the style battle hands down? Who do you think dresses the best? For me, it’s a tough tie between the Parisians and the Scandis, because their values are similar, and I’m all about that comfy/stylish life!
